Ladies and Gentlepants-

We give you the first official "Awesome" studio recordings - 4 songs commissioned by The Stranger and written for the Jonathan Safran Foer reading we played in 2005. Jonathan asked if we'd record them and, being the agreeable guys we are, we agreed.

This is not the full band - Ron Carnell is sitting in for Kirk on drums (a "session drummer", if you will. He's quite good, too). We're also missing John A. and David N., our mandolin and banjo players, respectively. And our guest vocalist is Sean Nelson.

The songs:

"JSF" - A fictitious encounter between Foer and the other reader that evening, Charles D'Ambrosio. That's Sean doing the narration. Vocals by John O., Evan, and Sean. Drums by Ron, bass by Basil, trumpet by Evan, bass clarinet by Rob W. and guitars by John O. Words & Music by John O.

"Anna" - Inspired by two different characters from Foer's books "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" and "Everything Is Illuminated" both named Anna. Vocals by John O. and Evan, accordion by Rob, guitar by John O., bass by Basil, trumpet by Evan, drums by Ron. Words & Music by John O.

"I'm Ok" - After hearing that we had written a song called "I'm Ok", Foer informed us that was the original title of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close". Small world! Or something... Singing duties are Evan, John O. and Sean, guitar by John O., bass by Basil, accordion by Rob, drums by Ron. In the end part, John O. and Evan sing some tricky backwards lyrics, John also plays banjo (in honor of David N.) and the mini-drum basket (in honor of Kirk), Rob plays melodica (in honor of John A.) and Evan plays tambourine (in honor of a character from "EL & IC"). Words by Evan, Music by John O.

"Clue" - Based on part of "EL & IC". Basil plays baritone ukulele, John O. sings, Evan plays trumpet, Ron drums and Rob accordions. John A. overdubbed the piano line a few weeks following the initial recording and we're really glad he did. Basil wrote the words and the basic music to this one and John O. came up with the rest. Also, Basil got the French translations off the internet and had to coach John O. on the pronunciation, so no fair getting on our case, all you Francophones out there...

Special thanks to Christopher Frizzelle and Sean Nelson.
